Manifesting a Dream: Bella Mente

Manifesting a Dream: Bella Mente

by Sharon Green October 11, 2018

One of the joys of being a photographer is when I consider a boat as more than just an inanimate object. In many cases it’s the manifestation of a life-long passion and dream, brimming with energy and personalities.

Bedlam on the Bay

September is a time of transformation. New season, new schools, new clothes … it’s a time for big changes – and a time for Big Boats.

That’s the Rolex Big Boat Series regatta in particular, which St. Francis Yacht Club has hosted for more than 50 years in San Francisco Bay. Since the early 1980s,

Matias: immersed!

Matias: immersed!

by Sharon Green June 30, 2018

For nearly a decade we’ve had the pleasure of featuring Matias Capizzano’s work in the Ultimate Sailing Calendar. Featuring dinghies – like our July Optis – frequently manned by young sailors; it’s a great equalizer to the big boats and offshore venues you typically find in the calendar.

Sailing in Paradise

Sailing in Paradise

by Sharon Green April 30, 2018

Drawing over 300 boats in the heyday, KWRW had all the splash and sizzle I could ever dream of! It was frequently ‘Fresh to Frightening’ with big seas, breeze, and boats: including the latest and greatest.

Many vendors would use KWRW as a launchpad for new boats or products; so it wouldn’t be unusual to bump into sailing celebrities and rock stars, industry

Behind the scenes - February

by Sharon Green February 04, 2018

One of my favorite places to shoot is San Francisco Bay, and you can see why, when you look at the February image (which is also the cover) of the 2018 Ultimate Sailing Calendar!

San Francisco always delivers. The combination of stiff breeze, strong currents and

THE ULTIMATE HALLOWEEN

THE ULTIMATE HALLOWEEN

by Sharon Green October 30, 2017

What could be better than fun, friendly sailboat racing, with the world’s top sailors, in paradise? The Bitter End Yacht Club (BEYC) Pro-Am Regatta has been doing that for 30 years: bringing top-notch pro racers to compete with regular folks, like you and me; in Virgin Gorda, in the British Virgin Islands.

Big Deal, at Big Boat

Big Deal, at Big Boat

by Sharon Green October 10, 2017

The Rolex Big Boat Series has been held at St. Francis Yacht Club since 1964. As the name says, it was originally a showcase for the really big boats (and egos) of San Francisco Bay to swagger and lock horns, and has been “must do” for me each September, since the early 1980s.

J Class Worlds

J Class Worlds

by Sharon Green September 11, 2017

The regatta was plagued with light air, causing dock holds and long postponements, waiting for the sea breeze to fill in. One day they didn’t start racing until late late afternoon! That is frustrating and discouraging, all that lost momentum, and lost time and money too; trying to time the aerials, with a

Medicine Man

Medicine Man

by Sharon Green August 28, 2017

The last six weeks I have been eating, drinking, sleeping Transpac – the 2,225-mile sailboat race from Los Angeles to Honolulu, that’s been held every two years for the last century. But in truth, we have hardly been sleeping. Sometimes I wouldn’t even know what day it was. Betsy, who was doing all the logistics and ETA’s for boats,

The Throes of Transpac

The Throes of Transpac

by Sharon Green July 09, 2017

I wake up to a ‘tap-tap-tap’ coming from a dark corner of the hotel room. It’s barely 6AM and Sharon is already up, processing cards from yesterday’s shoot. I’ve been scrunched on a sliver of my bed – the other half stacked with foulies and luggage, as every inch of floor space is covered with camera equipment, camera batteries

Shot & Conquered

Shot & Conquered

by Sharon Green June 17, 2017

We really wanted to get onboard with this race, the minute we heard about it. Big boats, going to weather in the Santa Barbara Channel, before turning the corner and heading to San Diego: what a great setting and epic breeze! The 2015 race was amazing – but last year we were shut out by the fog. So I was pretty nervous about booking a helicopter this year.
